Blood, Stem Cells and Cancer of the Blood
Hematopoiesis is the formation of blood cells which are responsible for constant maintenance and immune protection of our body. The blood-forming stem cells, known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are indispensable for the renewal of our blood by producing billions of new blood cells each day. Defects in this process can result in various diseases including leukemia and lymphoma. A better understanding of the biology of blood cells is essential to develop approaches to treat these disorders.
Significant research has been carried out to dissect the mechanisms that control normal blood cell development as well as the causes, diagnosis and treatment of hematopoietic malignancies. Scientists have discovered many key factors and events that play critical roles in normal or leukemic hematopoiesis. Researchers have also taken their knowledge of hematopoietic regulation one step further to develop more effective therapies including marrow transplantation and application of rationally designed drug that specifically targets malfunctioning proteins.
This lecture series will focus on the basic concepts and latest knowledge about the normal hematopoietic system as well as hematopoietic malignancies, the progress of current researches in the field and its potential applications.
